Overview

This book describes the world of different flavors from the point of view of a child. It provides a deeper and broader interpretation of our sensation of taste. Six-year-old Solwoo lives with her grandmother, mother, father, her seven-year-old brother, and a two-year-old younger brother. When her younger brother is rushed to the hospital after swallowing a button, she thinks to herself, “Maybe Yunwoo thinks buttons taste good!” With that, she thinks of all the different things that can taste amazing to their pet cat, their houseplants, her mother, her father, her grandmother, and so on. She also wonders about the food that she herself thinks taste good, and this opens up a world of imagination.

Mommy says she can’t live without kimchi; Daddy loves to slurp hot stew while declaring that it’s “refreshing.” To Solwoo, this represents a new world of flavors and food. By observing how different people eat and like different foods, she wonders what it means for a certain food to taste good. The author explores different delicious foods, delicious spaces, delicious time, delicious smells, and delicious sounds from the perspective of young Solwoo. And by journeying through delicious foods, time, smells, and sounds, Solwoo ultimately discovers that her home, with her entire loving family, is the most delicious place of all.
